For most local businesses in Dubai, the most valuable piece of online real estate is not their website. It is the small box that appears on Google Maps and in the map results when someone searches for what they sell. That box is your Google Business Profile, and it often decides who gets the call before anyone visits a website at all.

This guide covers exactly how to optimise that profile: what Google looks at, which settings matter, what to post, how to handle reviews, and the mistakes that quietly hold businesses back. If you want the bigger picture first, start with what local SEO is and how it helps Dubai businesses.

The short answer

To rank higher on Google Maps, give Google a complete, accurate and active profile, earn a steady flow of genuine reviews, and back it up with a website that confirms who you are and where you work. The businesses at the top of the map pack are rarely the biggest. They are usually the ones whose profiles are the most complete and the most alive.

What is a Google Business Profile?

A Google Business Profile, formerly called Google My Business, is the free listing Google shows for your business on Maps and in search. It includes your name, category, address or service area, hours, phone number, website, photos, reviews, posts and a list of your products or services.

People use it to decide whether to call you, get directions, message you or visit your website. For many searches, especially on mobile, they never scroll past it.

How Google ranks businesses on Maps

Google says local rankings depend on three things. Everything in this guide improves one of them.

  • Relevance: how well your profile matches the search. Driven by your categories, services, description and website content.
  • Distance: how close you are to the searcher or the location in their search. You cannot change this, but a strong profile stretches the radius where you can win.
  • Prominence: how well known and trusted you are. Driven by reviews, mentions of your business across the web, links to your website and general search presence.

Step 1: Get the foundations exactly right

Business name

Use your real trading name, the one on your signage and trade licence. Adding keywords, such as “Best Dental Clinic Dubai Marina”, breaks Google’s guidelines. It can work briefly and then get the profile suspended, often after a competitor reports it.

Primary category

This is the single most important ranking setting on the profile. Choose the most specific category that describes your core business. “Cosmetic Dentist” is better than “Dentist” if that is mainly what you do. Look at which primary category the top three competitors for your main search are using; it is usually a strong clue.

Secondary categories

Add categories for other genuine services, but do not pad the list. Every category should describe something you actually offer.

Address or service area

If customers visit you, show your address. If you travel to customers, as cleaners, AC technicians and movers do, hide the address and set service areas by the communities you cover. Dubai addresses can be written many ways, so pick one format and use exactly the same one on your website and every directory.

Phone number and WhatsApp

Use a local number that is answered during business hours. Add your website and, where available, turn on messaging or link WhatsApp so people can reach you in the way most UAE customers prefer.

Hours

Keep them accurate and add special hours for Ramadan, Eid and public holidays. Google tends to show businesses that are open at the time of the search more prominently, and nothing loses a customer faster than turning up to a closed door that Google said was open.

Step 2: Fill in every section that helps customers decide

  • Description: 750 characters on what you do, who you serve and what makes you different. Write it for people. Mention your main services and area naturally, once.
  • Services or products: list each one with a short description and price or price range where possible. These feed relevance directly.
  • Attributes: accessibility, payment options, languages spoken, women-led, online appointments and so on. They appear on the profile and can match filtered searches.
  • Booking link: if you take appointments, add the link so people can book without calling.
  • Questions and answers: add the five questions you are asked most often, with clear answers, so the first answer people see is yours.

Step 3: Use real photos, and lots of them

Profiles with good photos tend to get more clicks and direction requests. Upload a clear logo and cover photo, then real photos of your premises inside and out, your team at work, and finished jobs. For a restaurant that means dishes; for a contractor, completed projects; for a clinic, reception and treatment rooms.

Add a few new photos every couple of weeks. Avoid stock photos. Customers can tell, and they are looking for proof you are real.

Step 4: Build a review engine, not a review campaign

Reviews are the single biggest lever most businesses control. Google looks at how many you have, how recent they are, your average rating, whether you respond, and the words customers use.

  1. Ask every happy customer, at the right moment. Right after a successful job or appointment, while the experience is fresh.
  2. Make it one tap. Copy the review link from your profile and send it by WhatsApp with a short, personal message.
  3. Make it routine. Put the request into your process, for example an automated WhatsApp message a few hours after the invoice is paid.
  4. Reply to every review. Thank people by name and mention the service. For negative reviews, stay calm, apologise where fair, and move the conversation offline.
  5. Never buy or incentivise reviews, and never have staff write them. Google removes them, and repeated patterns can get a profile suspended.

A steady trickle of new reviews every month beats a burst of fifty followed by silence.

Step 5: Post updates every week

Google Business Profile lets you publish updates, offers and events. Posts show on your profile and signal that the business is active. Good post ideas:

  • A recent project or happy customer, with a photo
  • A seasonal offer, such as a summer AC service or a Ramadan menu
  • A short answer to a common customer question
  • A new service, product or team member
  • Links to your latest blog articles

Keep each post short, include a real photo, and add a button such as “Call now”, “Book” or “Learn more”.

Step 6: Make your website back up your profile

Google cross-checks your profile with your website. Make sure your site shows the same name, address and phone number, has a dedicated page for each main service, mentions the areas you serve, loads fast on mobile and includes LocalBusiness structured data. Link your profile to the most relevant page, which is usually the homepage for single-location businesses or a specific location page for multi-branch ones.

Step 7: Keep your details consistent across the web

List your business on Apple Maps, Bing Places, and the UAE and industry directories that matter in your sector, using exactly the same details. Consistent citations reinforce prominence; conflicting ones create doubt about which address or number is correct.

Mistakes that hold Dubai profiles back

Mistake Why it hurts Fix
Keywords stuffed into the business name Breaks guidelines, risks suspension Use the licensed trading name only
Duplicate listings from an old address Splits reviews and confuses Google Request removal or merge through Google support
Virtual office address for a service business Can trigger suspension Hide the address and set service areas
Wrong or generic primary category Weak relevance for your main searches Pick the most specific accurate category
Unanswered reviews Looks neglected to customers Reply to every review within a few days
No activity for months Competitors who post and collect reviews overtake you Weekly post, fortnightly photos, monthly review target

How to measure progress

Your profile’s performance section shows how many people found you, how they searched, and what they did: calls, website clicks, direction requests, messages and bookings. Track these monthly. Also check where you appear for your main searches from different parts of the city, not just from your own office, because rankings change block by block.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to rank higher on Google Maps?

Fixing an incomplete or inaccurate profile can show improvements within a few weeks. Reaching the top three for competitive searches usually takes a few months of steady reviews, posting and website work.

Is Google Business Profile free?

Yes. Creating and managing the profile is free. You pay only if you choose to run Google Ads, which can also show your business in the map results with an “Ad” label.

Why was my Google Business Profile suspended?

Common causes are keywords in the business name, an address that is not staffed during business hours, duplicate listings, or suspicious changes made in a short time. Fix the cause, then request reinstatement with evidence such as your trade licence and photos of your premises.

Can I have more than one profile?

Only one per real location. A business with branches in Deira and Jumeirah can have a profile for each. Creating extra profiles for areas you only serve, without a staffed location there, breaks the guidelines.

Where to go from here

A Google Business Profile is not something you set up once. It is closer to a shop window that needs regular attention. Get the foundations right this week, start asking every customer for a review, and post something useful every week. Within a few months, most businesses are surprised at how many calls come straight from Maps.

If your profile is not showing up where it should, our SEO team will review it, check your rankings across your service areas, and tell you the changes that will bring the most calls.
